 António CandeiasDr. Marta Sanchez Jan. 1, 1923 - April 15, 2006http://music.cmu.edu/dalcroze/ Founder of the Carnegie Mellon University Dalcroze Training Center, died April 15, 2006 at her home in Barrington, Rhode Island. Dr. Sanchez moved to Barrington after retiring from Carnegie Mellon where she taught for 40 years. Marta was a master teacher, a consummate musician, a creative thinker and a visionary. Her many accomplishments during her tenure at Carnegie Mellon include designing and supervising the eurhythmics program for Head Start when it began in the Pittsburgh Public Schools; initiating the Lucca Opera Program for singers; co-developing Piano Tutor, a multimedia program for teaching beginning piano and the Rhythm Project, an interdisciplinary project within the university. Her greatest legacy to Carnegie Mellon is the Dalcroze Training Center which she established in 1968. After retiring in 1997, Marta continued to give workshops in Europe, Latin America and Asia returning to Carnegie Mellon each year for the annual Summer Dalcroze Workshops. She initiated the Dalcroze Training Center satellite programs in Taiwan, Japan and Korea. As recently as last September she was giving workshops in Indonesia. Marta touched the lives of all who knew her. To honor Marta by carrying on her work, the Carnegie Mellon School of Music Dalcroze Training Center has established the Marta Sanchez Memorial Fund. A memorial tribute to Marta Sanchez took place at Carnegie Mellon on Friday, July 14, 2006 at 4:30 pm in the Kresge Recital Hall, College of Fine Arts. The tribute was live webcast to the world.
